There's an app for both iPhone and android that gives information on the healthcare services that you are entitled to while travelling in europe.
This is very important, as when you are in a foreign country, you are under the same conditions that nationals of that country.
We had one case in which a family travelled to France the son had a fall and was taken to hospital. They presented the EHIC and went their way. When they returned, an invoice for 30% of the treatment was waiting for them, as in France the healthcare covers up to 70% of the medical treatment, but they didn't know that. In the end they had to wire the money to the treasury of the hospital. It was a mistake of the hospital personnel not charging them the 30% there, but if they had known, they could have asked, instead of receiving an invoice, not understanding why, and having to call the French hospital and ask for an explanation (not an easy thing to do). In fact it was more complicated, because initially they charged them the 100% of the costs (100 euros for a bandage over the cut....), so we had to contact the French hospital and contest the charge. In the end they admitted their mistake and sent an invoice for the 30%. But this could have been prevented knowing the characteristics of the French system.
So if you are planning on travelling either research, or download this app. You also have the emergency numbers and more information.
